Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such iconic pop classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. See this unforgettable show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.

Singer and The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss adds even more razzle dazzle to that greatest of Broadway traditions: Chicago. Boasting sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch, Chicago tells the tale of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who'll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. During the showy decadence of the 1920s, their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

One-Man Spoken Word Show A Brooklyn Boy

Buy Tickets $20 $40

One actor. One Brooklyn neighborhood. 32 characters. A Brooklyn Boy is a one-man spoken word show that portrays Steven Prescod's coming-of-age story with a slightly different theatrical edge. As an impressionable teenager in Bed-Stuy, despite his efforts to break free from his neighborhood's unyielding grip, Steven was constantly pulled back, ultimately leading to his arrest. While facing a seven-year jail sentence, Steven could have been another statistic or another headline. However, he was given a second chance at life. Steven's gut wrenching story is unique, yet universal to all urban youth. Come see it at the East Village Playhouse in New York.

Lucia di Lammermoor: Donizetti's Tragic Opera of Love & Madness

Buy Tickets $30 - $98 $45 - $130

Love, betrayal and revenge have never been portrayed with more ravishing beauty than in Lucia di Lammermoor. Though the title character is indeed driven to insanity, it's the audience who goes nuts for Donizetti's tragic opera. The role of the title heroine who teeters between love and madness is shared by sopranos Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti and Pretty Yende, who have each impressed audiences with dazzling bel canto portrayals at the Met. Vittorio Grigolo and Michael Fabiano share the role of her lover. It's impossible not to be drawn into the tale of fragile Lucia, manipulated into marrying a man she doesn't love as she's used by her brother for his own political advancement. The scene when she finally "snaps" remains one of the most sublime -- and technically difficult -- in the entire operatic canon. Roberto Abbado conducts, while Tony winner Mary Zimmerman directs this chilling production of Lucia di Lammermoor.

Acknowledged as "just about the biggest name in Spanish-language pop music" by The New York Times, the Colombian singer-songwriter has racked up sales of more than 15 million albums and taken home a record-setting 20 Latin Grammy Awards. His magnetic stage presence and unique sound are backed up by an equally astonishing work ethic, touring while his records enjoy marathon stints atop the charts -- like '02's Un Dia Normal, which spent 92 weeks in the Top 10 on the Billboard Latin charts. Now he's touring behind his 2017 release Mis Planes Son Amarte, and hits the Hulu Theater at New York's Madison Square Garden with Chilean singer-songwriter Mon Laferte.

Usually a concerto features one soloist, but with Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, you get whole sections of the orchestra playing together as soloists. But he didn't stop there in composing this famous piece. Drawing on Eastern European folk music, Bartók blazed a trail right through traditional Western notions of tonality. The result is a cinematic work that builds to a whirlwind of sound. You won't want to miss the New York Philharmonic performing it live in concert at David Geffen Hall. Also on the program, artist-in-residence Leif Ove Andsnes, a "pianist of magisterial elegance, power and insight" (The New York Times), will bring his nimble fingers to bear on Debussy's Fantaisie. Conductor Edward Gardner kicks off the evening with Sibelius' Pohjola's Daughter.

Dancing the Gods is World Music Institute's annual Indian Classical Dance Festival, and this is the first US tour of the Dancing Monks of Assam! Traveling from beautiful monasteries on the river island of Majuli and surrounding Assam in north-east India, the Dancing Monks perform Sattriya -- a form of dance-drama cultivated as a way to worship in the monasteries of Assam. The monks dance to honor god Vishnu in his flute-playing Krishna incarnation, narrating playful, sensuous and fantastical episodes of his life, as recounted in the ancient epics. For centuries, Sattriya remained confined to the monasteries, where celibate monks practiced, nurtured and preserved it as part of their daily rituals. Women had little access to it until the mid-20th century. In 2000, the government of India incorporated the dance into its pantheon of classical arts. It is an unbroken, living tradition that includes drama, dance, song and a special form of choreographed yoga. The Philadelphia-based Sattriya Dance Company was launched in 2009 by Mahdustima Bora and Perona Bhuyan 2009 with a mission to tell the story of and promote Sattriya, as well as raise awareness about Majuli and the sattras through performances, lecture demonstrations, and classes. Together, they will perform the premiere of Sattriya: An Odyssey of The Spirit, choreographed by Bhabananda Barbayan. Your ticket to this show at New York's Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Symphony Space will also include a pre-show lecture and demo with co-curator Rajika Puri, along with a post-show "Chat & Chai" reception with the performers.

Unexpected Joy: New Musical Tests Family Bonds

Buy Tickets $25 - $49.50 $67.50 - $72.50

Unexpected Joy tells the story of three generations of female singers. Burdened by long-held family tensions, they share a week together where change is in the air. In modern day Cape Cod, Joy, a baby boomer and proud hippie, is holding a memorial concert for the other half of her popular musical duo, Jump & Joy. When her tightly wound conservative daughter and her sweet rebellious granddaughter arrive from Oklahoma, the sparks fly as one family seeks to find the common ground in their different values, dreams and goals. A heartfelt and hilarious story that celebrates diversity and acceptance, this new musical weaves folk-rock, pop and blues in bringing together a family that hasn't experienced true joy together for decades. Catch the New York premiere of this rousing production at York Theatre Company.

Travel back to 18th century Britain for Sancho: An Act of Remembrance, the unusual and gripping tale of Charles Ignatius Sancho, a man born on a slave ship who eventually became a musician, social satirist and the first person of African origin to vote in Great Britain. He was even befriended by Shakespearean actor David Garrick and painted by Thomas Gainsborough. This new one-man play was conceived, written, as well as performed by renowned British actor Paterson Joseph (Royal Shakespeare Company, HBO's The Leftovers). Joseph's play offers moving, surprising and often funny insight into the forgotten but true story of a man who dared to act, write, sing, dance and voice his political opinion with wit and charm. See Sancho's trials, travails and achievements come to life onstage in this compelling historical gem, Sancho: An Act of Remembrance, at New York's National Black Theatre.

For a singer with such powerful pipes, it's something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a "listener." Then again, maybe it's her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston its amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them -- something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this concert at Club Bonafide.

The Musical Offering & Frederick the Great

Buy Tickets $20 $40

Music and intrigue from the court of Frederick the Great fill this noble program. A standard-setting hub of ideas and influence throughout much of the Enlightenment, Frederick's court employed C.P.E. Bach, son of J.S. Bach, whose progressive music the king preferred over his famous father's. Yet the elder Bach would prove his mettle: after being challenged by Frederick to improvise over a complex 21-note theme the king had written, Bach responded with his sublime Musical Offering -- the heart of which is heard here alongside music by the king's court composers of choice: Quantz, who taught Frederick the flute; Graun, who served as his Kapellmeister; and C.P.E. himself, rumored to be the real author of the Musical Offering theme. St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble performs Trio in E-flat for flute and violin by Quantz, Cantabile and ma un poco Adagio from Violin Sonata in G Major by J.S. Bach, Quartet in G Major for flute, viola, cello and harpsichord by C.P.E. Bach, Sonata in C Minor for viola and harpsichord by Graun and the Trio Sonata from the Musical Offering by J.S. Bach at the Brooklyn Museum.
